We are currently seeking an Industrial Designer to join our Products Business Unit within our Edmonton office.

Job Expectations

The Industrial Designer reports to the Products Business Unit Manger and is responsible for the imagination and translation of new product concepts into reality through a design process. A high degree of creativity and dual focus on FORM and FUNCTION will be required for design of products ranging from furniture and architectural installations to vehicle bodies and industrial environmental systems.

Activities will include interfacing with clients and team members to create and refine ideas, sketching and rendering concepts, preparing and presenting materials, translating concepts into scale models and manufacturable designs, and aiding in the development and constant improvement of new products. Understanding of metal manufacturing processes, industrial products, and 2D/3D CAD software will be a requirement. Interest in design as a process, enthusiasm for sustainability and innovation, and the ability to work dynamically within a team will be strong assets.

Detailed description: 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

General Requirements
• Working with clients to capture identified and intangible product needs and establish long term business relationships.
• Preparing presentation materials (will include some element of illustration or graphic design) and pitching to clients.
• Communicating with project team members on a daily basis to resolve issues and conflicts, and to work toward achieving project goals and objectives.
• Managing design projects and maintaining project documentation which may include meeting notes, concept drawings, computer files, client presentations, schedules, and fabrication drawings.

Product Design
• Design for a wide range of applications (e.g., architectural building elements, industrial vehicles, multimedia installations, and industrial environmental protection or water treatment systems).
• Brainstorming, sketching, rendering, drafting, and refining design concepts.
• Applying knowledge of existing and cutting-edge (e.g., 3D printing) manufacturing equipment constraints to design products for optimal manufacturability.
• Producing production-ready CAD files and interfacing with Production and Research & Innovation to prototype new products.

Qualifications
Essential
• University degree in industrial design or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in the design and detailing of manufactured products (a strong portfolio will be an asset).
• Excellent hand sketching to communicate proportion, scale, and form.
• Ability to visualize three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional drawings and the relationships between parts in machinery and systems.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, suppliers and project stakeholders.
• Must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously and keeping them on schedule and kept accurate and up to date.
• The ability to organize work in a systematic way; to keep neat, accurate and orderly records of all work and documentation.
• Strong artistic and analytical skills required.
• Must be able and willing to work independently and be able to work in a team environment.
• Must be punctual and may be required to extended hours to complete projects on time.
• Competent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Solidworks.
• Experience in the manufacturing industry.
• Understanding of detailing standards including dimensioning, tolerances, and welding symbols.

Desirable
• Highly desirable: a postgraduate degree in a design, engineering, or related field.
• SolidWorks Certified Professional (CSWP) or equivalent which shows proficiency to design and analyse parametric parts and moveable assemblies using a variety of complex features in SolidWorks.
• Proficiency with 2D CAD software such as AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.
• Familiar with various 3D CAD software such as Vectorworks, ProE, Tekla, StruCad, or Autodesk Inventor.
• Experience with precision metal fabrication.
• Experience with a wide variety of materials and manufacturing process (e.g., polymers, composites, coatings) and automation.
• Highly motivated and experienced in design service business development in relevant industries.
