Main functions:

Under the responsibility of the Mechanical Engineer, they will provide a team of 5 to 10 designers with technical support in order to perform the following tasks:

Specific Responsibilities/Tasks
• Track and follow departmental activities.
• Design mechanical or structural components for railway vehicles.
• Design components made of plastic or composite material based on the shapes and colors defined by the engineer.
• Design layouts for interior finishing components compliant with the applicable standards and fabrication specifications.
• Select hardware elements and other components required for installation.
• Provide a list of all material needed for manufacturing pieces and sets, and for installation of these elements on vehicles or fixed installations.
• Create drawings for the modification, manufacturing, assembly or installation of railway vehicle components.
• Make weight, restriction and thermal expansion calculations, when required.

The Team leader will also have the following responsibilities:
• Participate in the drafting and continuous improvement of modeling and drawing procedures.
• Document approved practices and ensure that they are followed.
• Recommend staff assignment according to their specific expertise and various project requirements.
• Evaluate the performance of the team’s developers and designers and ensure their development needs are met.

Department: Refurbishment – Rolling Stock
Reports to: Refurbishment Manager

Overall Responsibilities
The Mechanical Design Team Leader will coordinate the work of mechanical and electrical designers within the Refurbishment Department. The objective is to provide the structure design, interior finishes and various systems and rail vehicle components of passenger cars, wagons and maintenance equipment. The Team Leader will use 3D software to create conceptual design and shop drawings.

Details:

• College diploma (DEC) in mechanical design or Bachelor of Engineering.
• Advanced knowledge of a modeling software: Solidworks, AutoCAD 3D and Inventor.
• Ability to create drawings in French and English.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel is an asset.
• Advanced knowledge of corporate management systems (ERP) is an asset.

Working experience

Minimum experience required:

5 years

Qualifications required:

Experience
• A minimum of 15 years of experience in transportation ideally in rail.
• A minimum of 10,000 hours (5 years) in 3D design, ideally with Solidworks.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in team management.

Personal and Other Qualifications
• Good communication skills.
• Works well in a team environment.
• Strong interest in learning and applying newly acquired knowledge.
• An understanding of FRA, APTA, AAR, SAE, ASME, CSA and Transport Canada standards related to railway vehicles is also an asset.
• Valid drivers licence
