Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Niagara Region has openings summer 2024 for temporary, full-time Summer Student positions in our Public WorksDepartment for the divisions of Transportation Services, Forestry & Waste Management. The Summer Studentposition is responsible for providing outdoor and indoor operational and maintenance service to the Regional roadallowances and Public Works properties and facilities.

Our summer students perform a wide variety of duties,including but not limited to:

? Grass cutting, line trimming and lawn maintenance within the Regional road allowances and at Regional Public Works properties and facilities.
? Brushing, grubbing and pruning within the Regional right-of-way and at Regional properties and facilities.
? Traffic control-related work (e.g. flagging, setting up and tearing down safety devices) on Regional work sites.
? Poster removal, debris and litter pickup.
? Painting, cleaning, and stocking within Regional Public Works facilities.
? Utilizing hand tools and small power tools to perform general assembly and labour (indoor and outdoor).
? Performing daily mechanical safety checks of assigned equipment and adding fluids, etc. as required.
? Performing other operations-related activities associated with summer roadway maintenance.
? Assisting with planting, pruning, maintenance, and removal of trees on Regional property.
? Assist Sign manufacturing shop in fabrication of custom and roadway signs
? Assist pavement marking section with the application of pavement markings on roadways and/or parking lots bymeans of zone marking machines
? Compost and yard waste analysis and entry
? Assisting with various diversion program for Waste Management and assisting contractors
? Facilitating waste compaction studies
? Performs other duties as assigned.
In order to qualify, applicants must be starting or returning to full-time, post-secondary studies in September 2024 -please review the posting for all requirements.

Hours of work
All positions are scheduled 40 hours per week. Shifts vary depending on the position, however,most positions start between 7:00am and 8:00am daily, Monday to Friday.

Location & Travel
Locations vary throughout the Niagara Region. Some positions require working outdoors(including in inclement weather) and considerable travel between work sites during the day throughout Niagara. Allpositions require the student to have a reliable mode of transportation to work, and a valid G2 driver's license (at aminimum). Most positions require a valid and restriction-free G class driver's license, which is strongly preferred. Some positions require students to have access to a reliable vehicle for travel to various work locations throughoutthe day.

Physical Demands
The positions require the ability to perform physical activities such as walking, lifting, bending,twisting, climbing, crouching, sitting/standing for long periods, etc. (degree varies depending on the position).

Assets include
previous experience (including volunteer and co-op experience), training, education/courses andskills in the following areas (depending on the position):
? Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in a similar working environment is preferred (e.g.landscaping and/or construction).
? Experience working on the road allowance and setting up traffic protection plans is an asset.
? Basic understanding and knowledge of the use of hand tools, small power tools, basic mechanical equipment,lawn and tree maintenance equipment and activities, including but not limited to: push lawnmowers, line trimmers,mechanical blowers, commercial-grade zero-turn mowers, chain saw and/or brush chipper.

EDUCATION
? Completion of an high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED) is required
? Must be enrolled in/returning to full-time post-secondary studies in September 2024 (upon completion of summer employment)
? Valid CPR and First Aid certification is an asset.
? Valid chainsaw and brush chipper certification is an asset.
? Valid Traffic Control Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 training is an asset.

SKILLS
? Strong customer service skills.
? Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
? Competent health and safety awareness.
? Computer skills (e.g. email, internet, word processing).
? Ability to maintain orderly and accurate records.
? Requires lifting over 16 Kg. (35 lbs.), when moving equipment.
? Must possess a mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic tools and mechanical equipment related to roadmaintenance activities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
? Must be able to start full-time work no later than May 1, 2024 (unless otherwise agreed to by the Hiring Manager).
? Must be able to work the hours and duration of work outlined in the job posting.
? A valid and restriction-free G class license is preferred.
? Physical demands: the position requires the ability to perform physical activities such as walking, lifting, bending, twisting, climbing, crouching, sitting, and standing for long periods of time.
? Work is performed mostly outdoors, but does include indoor work as required.
? Frequent exposure to traffic, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and sunlight.
? Occasionally exposed to dust/dirt, noise, chemical/cleaning substances, grease/oil, odour, fumes, and vibration.
? Occasionally exposed to road kill, spent needles and other debris.
